A PROHIBITION PAST
Our distillery sits on the site that was once central to Alberta’s Prohibition past. Turner Valley was once the epicenter of Canada’s oil and gas boom in 1914. Optimism was high, the town was booming, and the oil was gushing. Times were good, but soon good times would be forbidden, as Prohibition dried up the bustling liquor trade. It wasn’t long before crafty locals began setting up stills on nearby ranches, and with it the growth of speakeasies, an illegal whisky trade and illicit activities, with infamous names like Al Capone, Sam Bronfman and the Sundance Kid tied into the story.
THE ELEMENTS
Location is everything, and our distillery has a few distinct advantages. Our bordering farms grow some of the world’s best barley. The glacier-fed Sheep River flows from the Rockies and right by our distillery. And our high-altitude location gives us the Angel’s Gift of accelerated maturation. We also use Percheron heavy horses to harvest some of our barley each year. Traditional methods meet a lyrical setting -- exactly the type of place you’d want your spirts to come from.
THE HEART OF THE BARLEY BELT
Alberta, our home Canadian province, is widely acknowledged as the best barley producer in the world. Our hot, dry summers, with 100 day grain maturation, gives us uniquely flavourful 2-row barley kernels. Most of the worlds whiskies use Alberta barley, so it is only natural that we make whisky in the heart of the world’s barley belt.
